Reading for Today: John 16:17-33

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

I like peace so much that I tend to avoid conflict whenever possible. But there are times when there is no escape. Such was the case the day a running disagreement between a co-worker and me came to a head. I made the mistake of warning her I didn’t like her tone. That prompted her to say, “Well, I’d better quit talking to you then.”

In the ensuing seconds, I knew I had to respond and that I was going to say something but I had no idea what it was going to be. I like to consider my words, especially if there is a chance they will hurt someone, but there was no time. I had to speak, and I had this awful feeling I was going to say something I would regret.

“Help!” was my silent prayer as I opened my mouth, still wondering what was going to come out.
“You really need to respect people more than you do,” I said.

That message made more sense than I initially realized and eventually led to a healing in our relationship.
To this day, I believe God brought peace to the situation because I asked him for help and because my co-worker and I wanted it so much.

Prayer for Today:
Gracious God, thank you for all the times you give us the strength to do what is right. Guide us during this Holy Advent season so that we may feel the peace you gave us in our hearts. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
