Scripture for Today: John 14:15-31
All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Counselor,
the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach
you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you
as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not
be afraid.
John 14:25-27
Certainly the world continues to have its conflicts. Lives
are torn apart. Violence, hatred, anger and despair flourish. Yet through
all the wars, conflicts, acts of terror and interpersonal problems, many
people are able to persevere. I believe those who persevere are a testament
to the Holy Spirit at work in their lives.
If the world did not have any conflicts, would this mean
everybody would be at peace? I argue they would still not be at peace.
Another type of conflict occurs within all of us. Sin, fear, uncertainty,
doubt, and numerous other forces were at war within us. Certainly
worldly conflicts may exacerbate these internal forces, but lives not
touched by war, poverty, disease and other worldly problems are often
at turmoil.
The peace of God is what is needed for humans to manage
during turbulent times and during times of personal crisis. Jesus
says he will give us that peace if we are willing to accept it from him.
At a time when our lives are filled with thoughts of giving presents,
isnt it comforting to know we can receive such a wonderful gift?
Prayer for Today: Dear Lord, Thank you for your gift of
peace. We pray that we will openly accept your help and comfort. Even
though times may wear us down, scare us and make us confused, we know
in our hearts that your Spirit is alive within us. With you in our corner,
of what challenger should we be afraid? We pray that the comfort from
the Holy Spirit will be accepted by all others, so they may live in peace;
even though the world around us may not be peaceful. In Jesus name
we pray. Amen.
