O Holy
Night
2002 Advent Devotion Collection
December 10
READING: Proverbs 8.1 and 22-31 and Psalm 8
When I look at your heavens,
the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars that you have established;
what are human beings that you are mindful of them,
mortals that you care for them?
Yet you have made them a little lower than God,
and crowned them with glory and honor. Psalm 8.3-5
Every time I think of the spectrum
of the universe in terms of time, complexity and size I am overwhelmed
at its creation by our God of all that is and ever will be. If I could
be a space traveler from some distant galaxy, surely one of the stopping
places for me would be that shining brilliant blue and white globe, planet
earth, as seen by photographs taken from the moon and from deep outer
space.
And so it seems to me that after hanging
the sun, the moons, the stars, and planets, and setting all in motion,
God then created man and woman, the only beings with the ability to think,
learn, create, and build, to help do God's work.
In this Advent season, may we be mindful
that just as God was a builder, so it was a builder's son that was sent
to the world on that holy night to teach us how to do the Builder's work.
Regardless of our occupations or stations in life, if you stop and think
about it, we are all builders of one sort or another. And each of our
contributions combined with all others, is a powerful tool in helping
build God's kingdom right here on earth.
PRAYER: Gracious and loving God,
we thank you for the gift of your son, Jesus, who came to help us build.
May we be inspired by the awesomeness of being a part of the Master Builder's
team. -- Al F.
