O Holy Night

2002 Advent Devotion Collection

READING: Luke 2.8-20

In that region there were Shepherds living in the fields keeping watch over their flock by night. Luke 2.8

Early last fall we were "House/Animal Sitting" for some dear relatives who live in rural Bethany, Illinois, in a beautiful country setting. While staying there, we often enjoyed the sights and sounds of night while sitting outside on their deck.

We were in awe and somewhat startled by the sweeping view and the vast number of stars in God's great universe that seemed to lift us up into their midst. Near and distant night sounds occasionally interrupted the peaceful tranquility of our quiet "Country Night". A large number of Canada geese were settling in for the night in a nearby pond, squabbling for best position, croaking frogs were challenging them by jumping into the pond to reclaim their habitat, a lone coyote howled in the distance. These were night sounds not often heard in our "city" neighborhood. We remarked "What a wonderful world and universe our God has blessed us with."

No doubt you have also shared similar experiences of the "Sights and Sounds of Night," as did the shepherds on that night so long ago in the fields outside the village of Bethlehem, guarding their flocks of sheep. This too was a quiet night until suddenly an Angel appeared among them, and the landscape shone bright with the glory of our Lord.

They too were startled and also afraid but the Angel reassured them saying "Don't be afraid, I bring you the most joyful news ever announced, and it is for everyone! The Savior-yes, the Messiah, the Lord, has been born tonight in Bethlehem."

As we prepare our hearts and minds to remember "That Night" long ago we need not be afraid, but should rejoice in the wonderful news of the birth of Jesus Christ, our dear Savior.

PRAYER: Almighty God, we thank you for the beautiful world that we live in with its awesome sights and sounds. We also than you for sharing your son, Jesus, who remains in our hearts and minds now and forever…Amen. Harold and Bess K.
