O Holy Night

READING: I John 1

This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light and in him there is no darkness at all. I John 1:5

In the darkness of the night, while others are snug in bed, I am blessed with an opportunity to sit outdoors and enjoy the celestial tapestry of God's creation. This is a pleasure that results from caring for some of His four-legged creatures and I have never considered it a chore. Whether it is the feel of the cold, brisk winter wind against my face as I snuggle into my coat and scarf, or the humid heat of a summer night as I look up at the stars and listen to the sound of the crickets, this nightly event is a true pleasure. The quiet of the darkness slows me down, clears away cluttered thoughts, and fills me with calm.

From this darkness, I receive an inner peace through witnessing the beauty of the night and feeling the strength of God's power. This renewing of my spirit is a gift that remains with me throughout the coming day and every day. It never leaves. It is now almost 5 a.m. as I am writing, everyone is asleep, and I am slipping out briefly for one last chance to enjoy the nighttime quietness before the awakening dawn.

PRAYER: Father in Heaven, today I pray that I may receive your love in a warm blanketing of peacefulness and a powerful rush of inner strength that is truly unsurpassable. May I know the darkness as a healer and never as something to fear. May I carry your light within me to illuminate the path you have chosen. Even in the darkness, may I always see your outstretched hand as you guide me safely into the arms of my Savior. Amen. -- Becky V.
