O Holy Night

2002 Advent Devotion Collection

READING: Psalm 91:2-6

He will cover you with his feathers,
and under His wings you will find refuge;
His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
You will not fear the terror of the night,
nor the arrow that flies by day.
Psalm 91.4

I am amazed every time I read this passage about the wonderful metaphor of a mother bird protecting her young under her feathers. Just the thought of the soft haven of feathers to rest and feel safe under is a comforting feeling. God keeps us safe and out of harms way under the loving protection of His "wings" in much the same way as the mother bird. The softness of the bird's protection is balanced by the hardness of the protection of the shield in the next part of the passage. God provides for our every need. How often I have felt the "terror of the night" and have forgotten the soft, warm haven and hard, solid strength of my Lord and Savior. God is faithful even in the blackest of nights to comfort our every fear. God is the strong, warm light that guides us through the night, never leaving us alone in the dark.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, You are our protector, guide and light even in the darkest of our nights. Help us to know, Lord that you are with us in our time of trouble when we cry out to you in pain. We praise you for your everlasting faithfulness and love. Guide and protect us Lord that we might be a beacon of light for others. Amen. -- Julie F.
