O Holy Night

2002 Advent Devotion Collection

READING: Matthew 2

…they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. Matthew 2.11

Did you ever wonder how those gifts were chosen? I doubt that a catalogue was consulted or an Eastern ebay was available. Gift-giving has become an important part of the celebration of cultural events. Anthropologists use it as a method of studying cultural differences. We spend time trying to select that right gift; its type, size, and color. And, when we find it, we know it is given with love. At Christmas time, we enjoy receiving one of the greatest gifts of all: the gift of Jesus. As we celebrate God's personal gift of his son, let us not forget that we have a personal gift we can give to our fellow humans. For some, it is the gift of the hands, and they are artists, musicians, writers, and inventors. For others, it is the gift of personality, and they are good listeners, teachers, peacemakers, and make us laugh. And lastly, it may be the gift of the heart; for they are volunteers, helpers, neighbors, and good Samaritans. Just as God gave us the gift of his Son without conditions, let us offer our unique gift to others with love, too. This is a great time to do to.

PRAYER: Our Heavenly Father, during this Holy season, let the gift of Jesus become our inspiration to use the gift we find in ourselves for the wellness of others. -- Dennis D.
