The Banners of Lent 1999

Our sanctuary is built in the English Country Gothic style, and was originally created with the understanding that the walls would be decorated by banners, flags, tapestries, and other fabric hangings.

Unadorned, the room is simple, austere, and filled with light. It lends itself to colorful decoration in celebration of the glory of God.

This series of banners was created in 1999 by a group of textile artists working at the request of the Worship Committee, chaired by Jody Featherstun. The hangings are made from a variety of fabrics on a plain cotton background.

Some unorthodox fabrics, such as "confetti foil" are used to give sparkle and light. The technique is a modified quilting approach that gives depth to the designs. The creators are Shirlee Johnson, Wanda Webb, Donna Adams, Carol Withrow, Gretchen Barron, and Jody Featherstun. The designer is Jane Watkins.

The banner themes were chosen to match the texts from the Common Lectionary, Year A. Texts here are from NRSV. Click on each photo to see it enlarged.
