The ChristCare Stitchers

Makes Blankets for Children in Need!

Stitch by Stitch, the ChristCare Stitchers Are Making a Difference! The ChristCare Stitchers, a mission and outreach group that has been meeting for more than five years has now dedicated over 1800 hand-made blankets, afgans, and quilts to Project Linus which distributes the blankets to area hospitals and fire and police departments to give to children in crisis or traumatic situations. In addition, they've given dozens of blankets to other children who have need of a warm hug. Their ministry, however, does not stop with children. We know that anyone can appreciate the warmth and comfort of a quilt handmade with love. Most recently, the group has been making blankets for clients of various Kidney Dailysis Centers in the Decatur area. The group continues to experience miracles as they stitch love and care into each blanket. Recently someone contacted the Stitchers to say there was a woman, legally blind, who loved to crochet, but could not afford yarn. They contacted her and found that she had four afghans already done to share with Project Linus. Within two weeks, a man showed up at the church with a pick-up truck FULL of beautiful yarn. His wife had recently passed away and he was looking for someone who could use the hundreds of skeins of yarn she had collected but hadn't used. How amazing that God not only sent someone to help make blankets, but the yarn as well!

ChristCare Stitchers meets every Tuesday, beginning at 9 a.m. They share a "pot-luck" style lunch and then continue their knitting, crocheting and quilting into the afternoon. There is room for any person willing to assist. People are needed who like to sew or able to press, (yes, with an iron), cut, select colors, assemble, tie comforters, or just generally float around and assist others. The group is made up of women of various ages, religious and ethnic backgrounds. It is a circle of love with Christ at the center which has a mission of supplying blankets to those in need of a comforting hug.

The stitchers have no fundraising projects and depend entirely on the generosity of friends and church members for supplies and cash to purchase necessary tools or supplies. Amazingly (or perhaps not so amazingly), the ChristCare Stitchers have never been without necessary materials. Almost as soon as a need arises, a gift comes from somewhere to fill the need. This is truly a miracle for which we thank God! Cash donations are accepted at any time. Donations of supplies must be approved by contacting Ernestine at the above e-mail address.

Project Linus is a not-for-profit organization which distributes blankets to area hospitals and shelters which in turn give them to children. The organization, which borrows its name from the adorable Charles Schultz character, Linus, believes that no child should ever be without a blanket to cuddle.

July of 2004 found the CristCare Stitchers celebrating and dedicating their 1000 blanket!

The Stitchers aren't all work and no play! Here, the ChristCare Stitchers take a break from the stitching and knotting and pressing and enjoy wonderful fellowship and great food at a tea and garden party. Click on any photo for larger image.
