MARRIAGE LICENSE INFORMATION
The following information is correct as of June 1,
2000.
The officiating minister will advise you of any changes.
All couples to be married in Decatur must have a valid marriage
license issued by the Macon County Clerk's Office, 141 South
Main Street in Decatur. Both bride and groom must present themselves
in the office and must have photo identification with them. You
must be able to spell the full-name of your parents, including
your mother's maiden name.
Hours: The County Clerk's Office is open from 8:30 a.m. to
4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and Saturdays 9:00 a.m. to noon
except holidays.
Time limit on marriage license: There is a one day waiting
period required between the time you make application for a marriage
license and the day it becomes valid. The license is good for
a period of sixty days from the date of issue.
The cost of the marriage license: $30.00 payable in cash or
check.
The officiating minister must receive the license before he/she
is authorized to perform the marriage ceremony and at least 24
hours before the wedding.
Following the ceremony, the minister will complete the marriage
license form and return it to the County Clerk's office. The
minister will also fill out a Marriage Certificate form and give
it to the couple after he/she has married them. This certificate
is legal proof of your marriage. However, if you want a copy
of the completed marriage license form, you may make application
for a certified copy at the office of the County Clerk for $7.
