Mission
We seek to do that by:
What We Believe
Central Christian Church is part of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and shares in ministry with the Christian Church in Illinois and Wisconsin. Our name, Christian Church, shows that we have a common bond with Christians the world over.
Disciples of Christ identifies us as a distinctive body within the whole of Christianity. Our symbol is the red chalice with white St. Andrew’s cross.
As Disciples, our roots reach back to the early 1800s when Scottish Presbyterians on the frontier of Pennsylvania and Kentucky, troubled by the feuding within churches at the time, yearned for all Christians to be united in a simple recommitment to a New Testament faith that emphasizes:
Open Communion
The Lord’s Supper, or communion, is celebrated weekly and is open to all who believe in Christ. One does not need to be a member of Central to partake of the communion elements.
Baptism by Immersion
In baptism, the old self-centered life is set aside and a new life of trust in God begins is a confirmation of our faith in Jesus Christ. For those growing up at Central, we practice baptism by immersion after one publicly confesses faith in Christ. For those transferring into Central, we accept other forms of baptisms and do not require a re-baptism within our faith fellowship.
Freedom of Belief
Disciples are called together around one essential faith: believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Persons are free to follow their consciences guided by the Bible, the Holy Spirit, study and prayer, and are expected to extend that freedom to others.
Unity of the Church
All Christians are called to be one in Christ and to seek opportunities for common witness and service.
Ministry of All Believers
Both ordained clergy and lay persons lead in worship, service, and spiritual growth. We have no formal creed. This is not because we deny the substance of a creed, but that we don’t use creeds as tests of membership. We profess a common faith in Christ Jesus, but what that means in the lives of individuals and how it shapes our community, may be different from person to person and over
time. People of a variety of backgrounds often find a spiritual home here, because we value each person and celebrate the depth and breadth of community in which God has created us.
We are Central Christian Church—a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world. As part of the one body of Christ, we welcome all to the Lord's Table as God has welcomed us.
